The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Title: The Fault In Our Stars
Author: John Green
My Rating: 5/5
Goodreads Summary: Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

My Review: First of all let me say that I believe that I've read this before and just don't remember reading it very well so I decided to reread it.

I was never and still am not close to people that have had cancer. I did have a friend who had cancer but I never really asked her about it.  Therefore I thought it was very sad but it didn't make me cry. It really was an emotional book but it didn't make me cry.  I was able to connect with it in a few other ways. I remember that I hated to go see my brother when he was alive and in the hospital. I remember seeing all of the kids with illnesses that I don't think they deserve. And this book just reminded me of this.

Another way I connected was with Hazel was on the religious standpoint but I'm not going to get into that on here.

I liked the way that John Green wrote his characters. You knew that they had medical issues but it wasn't overpowering. I think that they were evident on ever page of the book but when you have something like cancer it interferes with every part of your life. They also had issues that were't their illnesses.

My favorite character had to have been Augustus . He was just really optimistic character despite everything that had happened to him.  Isaac was another character that I had really liked. His reactions to some of the things that he had to go through were pretty funny. I love how he was so emotional about everything. Then Hazel was opposite of Augustus. She was pretty pessimistic. Most of the time she saw everything that could go wrong.

The setting was kind of interesting. At first I didn't really get the significance but after reading John Green's res ponces to some of the questions I did get the significance of the settings and it made complete sense.

The Book Cake Tag Thingy

The book cake tag is something that has been floating around youtube for a while and I decided that I liked the idea and wanted to post my book cake. So here goes:

1. Flour-  A book that starts off slow but gets better as you got into it. I chose Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell because I think that the begging was pretty slow with Cath staying in her room but after she started to leave her room it got more interesting.

2. Margarine-  A book that you thought had a rich and great plot: My choice was Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. The plot seems dumb and little at first but turned out to be really deep and so much more than a simple little romance.

3. Eggs- a book you thought was going to be bad but actually turned out to be pretty good: Id have to say it was a play I had to read for school called The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I'm not at all into plays and a vast majority of the time I don't like the books we read for class but I think that this one was pretty good.

4. Sugar- A sugary sweet book: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick. It was a really cute relationship and some of the younger characters were really cute and the relationships.

5. Icing- A book that covered all of your favorite things- This is really hard for me and to be honest I'd have to say that I don't have one because I really like most of the books I read. But the one thing I really do look for is characters. I love characters.

6. Sprinkles- A series that you turn to for a pick up- I don't have one. Usually I don't reread books.

7. The Cherry On Top- Your favorite book This Year. Well since we are in the middle of January I'll do the one from this month and it was Linked by Imogen Howson.

Review: Linked by Imogen Howson

Title: Linked
Author: Imogen Howson
Rating: 4.5/ 5

My Review: I really loved this book It was one of those books that I haven't heard too much about but that I think should have more buzz about it.

As always with me I like the characters. And I think that good characters are a must. In this story we have set of girls who are twins and this society doesn't really allow them and what they use them for is really bad but I can't tell you what it is. The twins Lissa and Lin couldn't be any more different. Perhaps Lissa was a privileged girl but what she goes through from the other kids in school and the way her mother treats her is horrid. And yet she remains able to trust them until they prove otherwise. Lin, she's the one who can't trust anybody and she doesn't understand that she has to be careful not to hurt people unless they do something to her. Cadan, their brothers best friend is an amazing person. He's understanding and sweet and everything you could want in a male character, except the "bad boy" part. At the begging though he seems like a real jerk who is really mean to Lissa but his attitude is kind of justified. He thought she was a spoiled brat who was pretending to have really bad headaches to get what she wanted. He risks his career and everything for her and yes I know that's a  bit cliche but it doesn't make it any less sweet. He was probably my favorite character. Bruce, who is the brother, isn't all that important so I don't have much of an opinion. The parent though they are so different. The mother, I feel like slapping her across the face for what she does to both Lissa and Lin, like how could you do that to your children, seriously? The dad he needs to develop a backbone I think but I do give him props for helping the two girls and for wanting to see the one. And then what we find out towards the end is pretty shocking.

Ok and now the random little things I noticed.
I really enjoyed how around every corner there was something new and most of the time unexpected. And the world, that was just wow, all of the electrical and mechanical things were pretty amazing. I just wish I could have seen more of it. I liked how it was a romance but it wasn't dominate at all, but it was there. Also, it was a pretty graphic story and very descriptive in the spacecraft scenes but not too bad. The one thing that I did not like was the ending. It felt semi rushed and although it was already a pretty big book I thing that another 50ish pages wouldn't have made that much of a difference. And there's a sequel that I'm a little flustered about. But I'm kind of not.

Let me know if you've read it and what you thought.

1. Ideas/ prompts/ exercises for writers
2. More Standalones : I feel like almost every book I read is a part of a series unless it's contemporary

4. Relationships that aren't perfect, like the ones in Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

7. Super relatable characters
8. Characters with problems that don't get solved

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Title: Fangirl
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Rating: 5/5

I really enjoyed reading Fangirl. I think that I liked it about the same as I did Eleanor and Park. Rainbow knows how to write books that appeal to her audience and she creates characters that are easy to relate to.
Her setting, although typical was an essential part to her story and I feel like she choose the perfect time and place for the events to happen.
One of my favorite things with any book are the characters. I feel that they make the story. As I mentioned before she creates characters that most people can relate to. Cath, the main character is the one that people can mostly relate to.Her obsession with the Simon Snow world is so similar to the way people acted and continue to act about the Harry Potter Series. Wren was a character so important to the story but at the begging she wasn't really there. Most of the things we learned from Cath or assumed from the information we were given. It's very sad what happens to Wren but I think that it was most definitely important to the story line. Levi was awesome. He was so friendly and outgoing that it made me want to be his friend. Reagan was my second favorite character. I love that she was funny and mean but not  overwhelmingly so and she was really rational. I didn't like Nick at all, his person, I mean. The relationships in this novel are so real and so true.
I personally did not relate to Cath as much as some other people. I never went way fangirl over a book as much as she did. So I didn't understand that as much as other readers do. I also was upset that it ended. I mean it ended in a good spot but I wanted to read more, but when dont I want more from a book when it's over.
Fangirl deserves the 5/5 because of the way the book was written and the characters. Rainbow Rowell is an amazing author and I reccomend this book.

Hopeless and Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover as such an amazingly written book. When I picked it up in the library at school I thought it was going to be something simple and similar to a ton of other books that I’ve read but boy was I wrong.
Characters: I am most definitely a character girl. I love an extremely well written character and this novel was full of them. I especially liked the relationships that Sky had with the other characters. Her friendship with Six, even though we don’t see them actually together too much is something unique. They understand each other and can pick on each other without the other taking offense. Also her relationship with Breckin is very cool. I really liked how he walked right up to her when they met and wasn’t afraid to tell her about himself. Now Holder on the other hand was sort of confusing at first. He was a very complex character. His temper seemed slightly out of hand at times and maybe a little frightening but when you learn why that is you learn that he had a semi-legitimate reason to act the way he did.  Sky was another complex character. She wasn’t like most teens with her lack of electronics and her lack of friends before attending public school. She and Karen’s relationship is another odd one. They are super close and although Karen was hiding things from Sky, she was a great mom to Sky.
My Favorite Quote from the book can be found on page 125. Holder is explaining to Sky the reasons he can’t kiss her. I think that this shows just how complex and sweet Holder is.
“Sky, I’m not going to kiss you tonight but believe me when I tell you, I’ve never wanted to kiss a girl more. So stop thinking im not attracted to you because you have no idea just how much I am. You can hold my hand, you can run your fingers through my hair, you can straddle me while I feed you spaghetti, but you are not getting kissed tonight. And probably not tomorrow, either. I need this. I need to know for sure  that your feeling every single thing that I’m feeling the moment my lips touch yours. Because I want your first kiss to be the best first kiss in the history of first kisses.”
Plot: Now at first this seems to be a simple book about a teen boy and girl falling in love but it is so much more than that. Colleen’s introduction of the true events in Sky’s life are really shocking and how Sky chooses to discover things about herself is also shocking, something I would never have the guts to face.
I really liked the way the book was written and the little cryptic flashbacks of Sky’s are also interesting and add a lot to the story. It wasn’t one where I was able to entirely predict the ending, not even close. My opinion of this book is that out of a 10 it deserves a 9.9 solely because I’m left with a few questions about the past and Holder which will hopefully be answered in Losing Hope, which is the same story told from Holders perspective.
Losing Hope which is the same story told from Holder’s perspective. I figured I might not enjoy it as much but I was wrong. I enjoyed it just as much as Hopeless. The story although the same is entirely different. To be offered it from his perspective as well as hers is something not many authors are able to do well but Colleen does a very nice job with it.
The characters are kept basically the same and we aren’t introduced to more really but we do learn a lot more about Les and Holder. I especially like the little letters he writes to her in the notebook. They offer a deeper Holder and it tells us exactly how he feels about certain things.  And the last one was the best. They are kind of like the flashbacks that Sky has in Hopeless.
My favorite quotes/passages are:
“For the next few minutes, we’re completely lost in what feels like sheer perfection. Time has completely stopped, and all I’m thinking about while we kiss is how this is what saves people. Moments like these with people like her are what makes the suffering worth it. Its moments like these that keep people looking forward and I can’t believe I’ve let them slip by for an entire month (219).”
“I didn’t want to let you down, Sky. I’ve let everyone down in my life that’s ever loved me, and after that day at lunch I knew I let you down, too. So… I left before you could start loving me. Otherwise, any effort to try not to disappoint you would be hopeless (223).”
“And while seventeen years doesn’t seem like near enough time to have spent with you over the course of a lifetime, it’s still seventeen years more than the people that never knew you at all. So if I look at it that way… I’m pretty damn lucky…… I’m gonna live my life now, Les. A life I’m actually able to look forward to, and I honestly never thought I’d be able to say that (321).”
